Bread Week is celebrated in week 37

Bread campaigns have been carried out in Finland since at least 1935. At that time, bakers organized a socalled bread propaganda week just before Christmas.

Nationwide campaigning to promote bread consumption began in 1964. Finnish Bread Information (formerly the Bread Committee) organized the first “bread rush” from October 4 to 10, which “could even be called Bread Week,” as the then executive director AnniHelena Rämö wrote about the week. The theme was novelty bread. Leipätiedotus advised bakers in Leipurilehti magazine: “Novelty breads and any new types of bread can very well be launched on the market at the beginning of this very week. Any bread tastings and the distribution of novelty breads should be timed for this week. The sample breads could be different size or shaped breads, both crispbread and soft bread. In this way, we revive the strong Finnish tradition of giving novelty bread as samples.” Bakeries and bread shops were also encouraged to arrange breadthemed window displays. Today, Bread Week is celebrated in September, in week 37.

Next Bread Week will be celebrated in week 37, from September 7 to 13

During the next Bread Week, we want to remind everyone that bread is an easy and healthy everyday solution when extra energy is needed for daily life. Bread is also an essential part of meals. Depending on the situation, many kinds of breads are suitable choices—highfiber breads, wholegrain breads, as well as “your favorite bread.”

This year’s Bread Week materials include two different posters, a table stand, and downloadable materials for social media. The readymade materials will be published on our website during the spring. They can be ordered free of charge (postage will be charged) from Finnish Bread Information using the materials order form.
